On June 7th, 2026, something extraordinary happened inside the walls of GrandKnights Chess Academy.
What began as a simple idea — a youth‑run chess tournament — grew into a moment that revealed the true strength of a community and the power of a young leader determined to make a difference.
The event was called The 67 Open, and more than 50 players showed up. But the real story wasn’t the number of participants. It was the purpose behind the gathering, and the person who brought everyone together: Coach Aayan Hetamsaria.
A Youth Coach With a Vision
At just a young age, Aayan has already spent seven years competing and five years coaching, earning the All‑Star Award at the Washington High School State Championship and defeating players rated 1800+ USCF. But on this day, his greatest accomplishment wasn’t a win on the board.
It was the way he led.
Aayan didn’t just run a tournament — he created a movement. He organized the event, rallied players, inspired families, and set the tone for a day built on generosity and unity. His leadership was calm, confident, and full of heart. Players felt it. Parents felt it. The entire room felt it.
This was a youth coach showing what leadership looks like: not through authority, but through purpose.
A Community That Answered the Call
The chess community responded with overwhelming support.
Players registered not just to compete, but to contribute.
Some paid the entry fee even though they couldn’t attend, simply to support the cause.
Families donated above and beyond.
Many volunteers stepped in without hesitation.
Young players encouraged one another between rounds, creating an atmosphere of unity and joy.
Chess is often seen as a solitary game — two players, one board, one battle. But on this day, it became something else entirely: a collective effort to change a life.
A Global Impact Born From Local Hearts
By the end of the tournament, the community had raised over $3,500 for the Akanksha Education Fund, a nonprofit serving children of maids, beggars, and families trapped in generational poverty in India. https://akankshafund.org.
To understand the magnitude of this: $3,500 funds ten full years of education for one child.
Ten years of learning.
Ten years of safety.
Ten years of opportunity.
Ten years that can alter the entire trajectory of a human life.
And it happened because a youth coach had a vision — and a community believed in it.
The Spirit Behind the Boards
The games themselves were full of drama: tactical shots, surprising upsets, brilliant endgames. But the most memorable moments weren’t the moves.
It was the 9‑year‑old who whispered, “I’m glad we’re helping someone.”
The parent who said, “This is what a real community looks like.”
The players who stayed long after their rounds ended cheered on others and chanted 6 7….”
These were the moments that defined the day — moments created by Aayan’s leadership and amplified by the community’s heart.
Coach Aayan’s Message
“When the chess community unifies together, truly rare and significant things tend to happen. This tournament showed that we’re not just playing chess — we’re shaping futures.”
Thank you to Coach Aayan for inspiring and leading this event, and especially to the Sankriti family and all the families whose kindness, volunteering, participation, and generosity brought this tournament to life.
