What is a rating? NWSRS vs USChess

A chess rating is a number ranging from 100-2800+ that represents a player’s past performance in chess competition. In general, the higher the rating, the stronger the chess player. In Washington state, we have two rating systems, the NWSRS and USchess. USchess is the official rating system that is nationally recognized. NWSRS is a less official rating system used by some organizers in the pacific northwest.

Where can I find my rating?

You can find your uschess rating on https://new.uschess.org/civicrm/player-search

You can find your NWSRS rating on https://ratingsnw.com/ratings.html

What to do the day before a tournament to prepare?

The best way to prepare mentally for a tournament is to get good rest. Players should avoid distractions like video games during tournaments to perform at peak mental capacity. I also advise against eating within 90 minutes before a tournament starting.

If a student feels the need to, he/she can warmup with puzzles and games the night before. I generally feel though that last minute preparation tends to hurt players more than help unless they are already competing at the highest levels.

For parents, be sure to read the welcome email in each tournament to know the schedule and what to expect in each individual event.

How can I find out and register for tournaments?

If you are looking for tournaments in the pacific northwest, the two websites that have this information are chessreg.com and nwchess.com/OnlineRegistration

How to qualify for the state championship tournament?

To qualify for the Washington state championship tournament, a student must earn a positive score in a minimum 4 round tournament (2.5 points in a 4 round tournament or 3 points in a 5 round tournament) in Washington state. (As of the 2023-2024 season).

Do I need to qualify for the National Championship?

The National Elementary, Middle school, and High School Championships are open to all participants without qualification. The only requirement is to have an active USchess membership.

How do I know which tournaments are suitable for my student?

Generally, the best tournaments for students are ones in which the student will be able to play players up to 300 points higher than they are currently rated. Students tend to learn the most by playing against players who are stronger than they are, but not significantly so.

Feel free to email us at info@grandknightschess.com if you have any specific questions related to your student.
